Susan Schubbe has volunteered in the Will County Fair Exhibit Building in Department M-4 every year since 1973. That year, when she was six months pregnant with her second child, she received a phone call from Mrs. Doris Froehner, who oversaw the exhibit building at the time. Mrs. Froehner was in need of someone to help in department M-4. Susan agreed to help and worked with department superintendent Irma Jurres for many years. After Mrs. Jurres passed away, Susan became superintendent of the department, and has remained there ever since. At one point, many years ago, she was asked to move to the floral department, but she declined because she enjoys M-4 so much. Throughout the past 50 years, Susan has enjoyed checking in and displaying thousands of beautiful sewn projects made by talented exhibitors, but what has kept her coming back for five decades is her love of the fair and local community. She fondly remembers sitting in the exhibit hall until it closed on warm summer fair nights visiting and reminiscing with friends and neighbors. Fair time is one of Susan’s favorite weeks of the year. For her it’s a treasured tradition.
